The Swiss League season has ended on a sour note for World Cup-bound Qantas Socceroo pair Scott Chipperfield and Mile Sterjovski, when they were pipped for the title by FC Zurich.

In what was a dramatic end to the season, FC Zurich-s Romanian defender Iulian Filipescu scored with the last touch of the game against FC Basel, with the three points drawing Zurich level on points with Basel, and ahead on goal difference.

It was FC Zurich-s first Swiss title for 25 years and ended Basel-s dominance of the Swiss league in recent years and broke a 59 undefeated run at home by Basel.

Zurich went into the match knowing victory would secure the title after Basel had lost a Round 28 game three days earlier against Young Boys.

As is fairly customary, Chipperfield started the match for Basel, with Sterjovski starting on the bench and replacing his fellow Wollongong-raised teammate late in the match.
