It will be the second occasion that the 33-year old has captained his country, with his only previous time at the Confederations Cup in 2001, where he led Australia to 3rd place with a 1-0 win over Brazil.
Vidmar is the most capped player of the current Socceroos with 73 appearances and was a natural choice to replace the injured Mark Schwarzer.
Schwarzer was ruled out of tonight-s second game against the Turks after bruising his hip in the same collision that saw Danny Tiatto left with a double fracture of his jaw, from game one on Friday night in Sydney.
Tony, and his brother Aurelio, have a unique place in Australian soccer history, as the only known family members to have both captained the national team.
Meanwhile Turkey have not named its side for the match although coach Ersun Yanal is expected to make a number of changes.
Tonight-s game will be shown live @ 7.00pm (aest) on SBS around Australia (check local guides for details) except in Melbourne where it will be shown on delay.
