The Joeys control their 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup destiny - and have every chance of progressing from their group says coach Tony Vidmar.
Australia sits in third place in Group C with one point after a draw against Mexico, and a win against Argentina in their final game would put them in good stead to qualify for the Round of 16.
Joeys head coach Tony Vidmar said it was up to the Joeys to make their own fortunes in their final match on Sunday morning (AEDT).
“We give ourselves an opportunity in our final game,” Vidmar said.
“It’s in our hands and that’s the way we want it to be.”
The Australians earned a point against Mexico on Thursday morning after a 0-0 draw, but the result could have easily gone either way.
Mexico controlled the match in the first half, while momentum swung in the Joeys’ favour in the second.
Vidmar said he was proud of how his side played, but there was still room to improve.
“We’re happy with the performance,” Vidmar said.
“The players put in a lot of energy.
“But now we need to have that little bit more quality on the ball.”
It took two brilliant saves from Mexico goalkeeper Abraham Romero to deny Australia the three points.
“We had some opportunities to score,” Vidmar said.
“But the keeper made some fantastic saves.”
Panos Armenakas was denied at the death after his shot looked destined for the top left corner, but Romero wondrously denied Australia three points at full stretch.
The Australian attention now turns to Argentina on Sunday morning (AEDT).
Argentina will also need a win to have any hope of progression after succumbing to Mexico 2-0 in their opening game, and being demolished 4-0 by Germany in their second match.
