Socceroos World Cup farewell match

FFA and the NSW Government have announced that the Socceroos will meet South Africa’s National team, Bafana Bafana, in a World Cup farewell match.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the NSW Government have announced that the Socceroos will meet South Africa-s National team, Bafana Bafana, in a World Cup farewell match, presented by NAB, in Sydney on Monday 26 May 2014 (kick-off at 7:30pm AEST).

The NSW Premier Barry O-Farrell confirmed that the farewell match will be staged at Sydney's ANZ Stadium and urged football fans everywhere to make the send-off for the Socceroos a memorable night.

“The Socceroos have done this nation and NSW proud by qualifying for their fourth World Cup last year in front of 82,000 ecstatic fans who filled ANZ Stadium in June,” Mr O-Farrell said.

“As Australia-s global tourism and events city, Sydney is a fitting destination to send off our national football team.”

“This is another major events win for NSW and adds to the long list of events the NSW Government has secured for Western Sydney since coming to office.”

Tickets for the match will go on sale to the Football Family tomorrow (Tuesday 4 March) from 9am. The public on sale commences at 9am on Wednesday 12 March.

FFA CEO David Gallop said that the match against South Africa is the perfect opportunity for the nation to get behind the Socceroos before they leave Australia for the biggest event in world sport.

“The fans make a difference whenever the Socceroos play and it-s even more of a boost before the team heads to Brazil,” said Gallop.

“To have the farewell match at a world-class venue such as ANZ Stadium will provide an ideal backdrop for fans and players alike.”

Gallop also announced that the Socceroos would hold their final Australian training camp on the Central Coast from 16-22 May 2014, utilising Central Coast Stadium as a venue.

“I thank Gosford City Council for their great support to make this training camp happen on the Central Coast," said Gallop.

“The facilities on the Central Coast are excellent and it will be a great opportunity for fans in the region to see the Socceroos complete their preparations there."

FFA today also confirmed that the Socceroos will play a warm-up match in Brazil against Croatia on 6 June before their opening match of the tournament against Chile on 13 June.

The 26 May match will be the 21st official meeting between the Socceroos and South Africa at senior men-s international level, with the South Africans holding the advantage with 12 wins to the Socceroos 6.

The last meeting between the Socceroos and South Africa was in London on 19 August 2008 where they played out an entertaining 2-all draw. The last meetings between the two teams in Australia was in the two match “Nelson Mandela Friendship Tournament” which was played in Adelaide and Sydney on 8 & 12 June 1994 respectively with the Socceroos winning 1-0 in each match.

The match between the Socceroos and South Africa, presented by NAB, will be broadcast live and exclusive on FOX SPORTS.

Tickets will go on sale to the General Public from 9am Wednesday 12 March. For all ticketing details, please visit www.footballaustralia.com.au/tickets
