Ryan learns Europa League quarter-final fate

Caltex Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan is set to line up against Spanish outfit Celta Vigo in the Europa League following the quarter-final draw of the European competition overnight.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper is currently on-loan at Genk and helped his side into the last eight mid-week following a 6-3 aggregate triumph against fellow Belgian side Gent.

Genk claimed a 5-2 win in the opening leg of their Round of 16 tie, during which Ryan saved a penalty.

A 1-1 result in the return leg on Thursday secured their place in the last eight of a major UEFA competition for the first time.

In the other match-ups Premier League giants Manchester United have been drawn against Belgian Pro League leaders Anderlecht.

Serie A outfit Lyon will face Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas, while Dutch powerhouse Ajax will come up against Germany’s Schalke.

Ryan is part of the Socceroos squad that will face Iraq and UAE in two massive World Cup qualifiers during the upcoming international break.

The first legs of the Europa League quarter-finals will be played on April 13 with the return legs to be played a week later.
