Roar make play for Dutch-based Socceroo

Socceroo midfielder Adam Sarota could return to Hyundai A-League champions Brisbane Roar FC as he seeks match time ahead of January’s AFC Asian Cup.

Sarota, who started his career at the Roar, has spent the last four seasons at Dutch club FC Utrecht.

But injury has cruelled the 25-year-old’s time in the Netherlands and he is struggling to break into Utrecht’s first team.

It’s led to the Roar making inquiries about taking Sarota on loan for the upcoming A-League season.

“We’re cautiously optimistic,” Roar managing director Sean Dobson told the Courier Mail.

Already boasting a star-studded midfield, the addition of Sarota would make Mike Mulvey’s side an even tougher proposition as they aim for back-to-back titles.

It would also be appealing to the Cairns-born midfielder, who is desperate to play matches to break into the Socceroos squad for the Asian Cup in Australia next year.

Sarota was a part of Ange Postecoglou’s 30-man squad for the World Cup but was cut before the squad flew out for Brazil.

The three-cap Socceroo has missed large chunks of the last two seasons after he underwent a knee reconstruction.
