Qantas Joeys win tournament in Holland

The Qantas Joeys have won the Groesbeek International U17 Tournament in the Netherlands after defeating German side Schalke 04 in the final.

The Qantas Joeys have won the Groesbeek International U17 Tournament in the Netherlands after defeating German side Schalke 04 in the final.

The boys went through the tournament undefeated, winning four games and drawing the other, in the modified set-up.

Each match was only 20 minutes each way in the group games and 25 each way in the finals and was a good test for the boys against international teams from around Europe and Africa.

In the final they convincingly beat Schalke 4-0, after earlier in the day defeating the only other national team at the tournament Kenya 4-2 in the semi final.

Despite the send off of Petar Franjic in the final after 20 minutes, the Joeys were too strong for the German outfit with goals scored by Brendan Hamill, who scored twice and Kerem Bulut.

In the semi final, the Joeys played an entertaining match against Kenya winning 4-2, with Eli Babalj scoring in just the first minute to set them on there way.

Kamal Ibrahim made it 2-0 with a superbly taken free kick that curled over the wall and past the Kenyan keeper

Mark Perrone made it 3-0 with a well placed shot, before Kenya pulled a goal back from the penalty spot with four minutes remaining.

From the kick-off, Nikola Stanojevic restored the three-goal lead, before Kenya scored just prior to full time to make it 4-2.

The previous day-s group games saw the Joeys beat Dutch side VVV Venlo 7-0, with the feature being Australia had seven different goalscorers - Kerem Bulut, Kamal Ibrahim, Marc Warren, Julius Davies, Chris Bush, Trent Sainsbury, Eli Babalj.

The second group match proved a tougher match with the Joeys held to a 0-0 draw by Shakhtar Donetsk.

The final group match against Dutch side NEC Nijmegen saw the Joeys get back into the winners circle with a convincing 4-1 win.

Bulut scored the first goal after five minutes and captain Jared Lum made it 2-0 after 16 minutes. Eli Babalj scored two second half goals to see Australia safely into the finals.
