Ange Postecoglou looks set to continue with a back three for the Caltex Socceroos’ last two FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Japan and Thailand.
The Socceroos boss named six central defenders in his initial 30-man squad on Tuesday, including two new faces who missed the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Matthew Jurman
The ex-Sydney FC man has earned his first senior call-up after a superb campaign in the K-League with Suwon Bluewings. Is match-fit, in form and with a strong left foot will provide great balance to the defence.
Matthew Spiranovic
Hasn’t featured in 2017 due to injury but is back to fitness playing in China’s second division with Hangzhou Greentown.
Trent Sainsbury
One of Australia’s best performers at the FIFA Confederations Cup, although he hasn’t played a competitive match since the Caltex Socceroos’ exploits in Russia.
Milos Degenek
The Japanese-based defender is a regular in Ange’s squads these days and is playing regularly with Yokohama F. Marinos.
Bailey Wright
Enjoyed a strong start to the season in the Championship with Bristol City, where he is the skipper. Played a full 90 minutes in the 2-1 loss to Birmingham City last weekend.
Ryan McGowan
McGowan is one of the more experienced members of the squad with 20 caps to his name. He’s currently at Chinese Super League club Guizhou Zhicheng although hasn’t featured in the last few CSL matches.
