Looking back: Our record at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium

For the first time in more than four years, the Socceroos will play Melbourne when they host Vietnam on January 27th. Take a trip down memory lane as we look back on our three previous outings at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

Over the years, the Socceroos have played in Melbourne more than 50 times but they have only featured at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on three occasions.

Monday's announcement means the January 27 match will be the first appearance of the national team in the Victorian capital since September 2017.

While the Socceroos have not played at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium as many times as other venues around the nation, our record certainly speaks for itself.

FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia qualifying vs Thailand | 2-1 win

The Socceroos defeated Thailand 2-1 in their final Group B World Cup qualifier for Russia 2018 in September 2017 at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

Captained by national team legend Tim Cahill, there was a sense of urgency from the start on a cool night in Melbourne.

Three late goals ensured there was plenty of drama with the Aussies scoring twice in the final 20 minutes to cancel out Thailand's effort.

AFC Asian Cup 2015 vs Kuwait | 4-1 win

Australia defeated Kuwait 4-1 in the opening game of the 2015 Asian Cup, coming from behind to start their title-winning campaign in ideal fashion at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

Kuwait led early against the run of play but Ange Postecoglou's Australians fought back, led by Massimo Luongo, who set up the home side's first goal and scored the second to hand the Socceroos a valuable three points.

A host nation had not won the opening game of an Asian Cup since 1968, but the Socceroos bucked that trend as they started their momentum.

Mass Luongo was the hero in 2015 at the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.

And just 22 days later, Australia lifted their first major trophy after an extra-time winner from James Troisi saw the Socceroos defeat South Korea claim a landmark Asian Cup victory.

FIFA World Cup 2014 Brazil qualifying vs Saudi Arabia | 4-2 win

The first time the Socceroos graced the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium it was one of the most entertaining nights you could wish for.

There were six goals - some of them absolute screamers - and loads of passion as Australia defeated Saudi Arabia 4-2 in FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying in February 2012.

Unlike what’s to come this January, there was nothing riding on this game for Australia. Earlier results had already ensured Holger Osieck’s Socceroos would progress to the final stage of World Cup qualifying for Brazil 2014.

The Saudis however needed a result and went at Australia in the first half. The Socceroos went down after 19 minutes but fought back in dramatic fashion thanks to goals from Alex Brosque, Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton.
