New names for Westfield Matildas training camp

Westfield Matildas Head Coach, Tom Sermanni, has selected a 27-player squad to take part in a training camp on the Gold Coast from 30 April to 4 May.

Westfield Matildas Head Coach, Tom Sermanni, has selected a 27-player squad to take part in a training camp on the Gold Coast from 30 April to 4 May.

Sermanni has chosen several players for their first Matildas training camp, including Laura Alleway, Stacey Day and Alison Logue.

The camp is one of several planned and is part of the ongoing squad selection process for the Westfield Matildas.

“The continued development of women-s football in Australia has widened the scope of talent available. The Westfield W-League has seen the emergence of some terrific young players and these camps will give us the opportunity to witness individual-s form close up,” said Sermanni.

Sermanni has been building his squad since the conclusion of the inaugural Westfield W-League season with preparations for the AFC Women-s Asian Cup 2010 firmly on his agenda.

“We have already qualified for the AFC [Women-s] Asian Cup in 2010 by finishing within the top four in the 2008 competition and there is a lot of work to do to prepare for the Asian Cup,” stated Sermanni.

“Having the time to train together as a team is critical if we are going to continue to be a force in Asia and we are very aware that there is still a difficult task ahead of us against some very good opposition.”

The AFC Women-s Asian Cup in 2010 also serves as a qualifying competition for the FIFA Women-s World Cup in Germany in 2011. Australia is currently ranked 14 in the FIFA World Rankings and fourth within the AFC.

This is the first in a series of Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) camps that will be taken to warmer climates during the winter months and the facilities on offer at Carrara Stadium are first class. Football Federation Australia would like to thank the AIS for their ongoing funding support for these camps along with the assistance and cooperation of the Gold Coast City Council and the Mantra Sun City.
