More to see from the Joeys, says Vidmar

Joeys head coach Tony Vidmar says his squad squad has been continually improving in the 2015 U-17 FIFA World Cup, and it’s a trend he expects will continue.

Australia’s U-17 national team started their campaign with a 4-1 loss at the hands of Germany, before showing a remarkable improvement with a 0-0 draw with Mexico.

On Sunday morning (AEDT), they take on Argentina in their final Group C match, with a win almost certain to guarantee a spot in the Round of 16.

Vidmar said his squad had been showing considerable improvement as the tournament went on, and said he was expecting even bigger things in this game.

“We have a rhythm; we have momentum going into this important game,” Vidmar said.

“We want to continue on in this tournament because there’s so much more to see from this team.

“Individually we’ve got some very good players, and collectively we’re starting to play the type of football we expect.”

The only result that will guarantee the Joeys passage into the Round of 16 - at this stage - is a win by two goals, and without receiving more than five FIFA Fair Play Points [a negative number calculated by amassed yellow and red cards].

However, any win will see the Joeys finish Group C in at least third spot on four points, but qualifying for the Round of 16 will depend on results in other matches, goal differences, and FIFA Fair Play Points.

Joeys head coach Tony Vidmar said his squad has one goal in mind: win.

“It’s do or die,” Vidmar said.

“If you win, you have a greater chance of progressing.

“If you lose, it’s definitely goodbye.

“We’re confident we can get the result to make us continue on to the tournament.”

The Joeys take on Argentina at 9.00am on Sunday morning [AEDT]. Coverage starts at 8.45am, live and exclusive on SBS ONE.
