Qantas Socceroo Harry Kewell is resting comfortably in Sydney after a minor hernia operation earlier this week.

Kewell sustained an injury in a recent match for his Turkish club Galatasaray when challenging for a high ball.

"Harry is fine and is aiming to start training again in 3 to 4 weeks time," said Socceroos coach, Pim Verbeek.

Kewell, in consultation with the Socceroos medical team and Galatasaray's management, decided to treat the injury straight away as Galatasaray is through to the latter stages of the UEFA Cup and the Turkish Super League is about to enter its winter break.

"Harry's a tough customer and is used to playing with, and through, injury over most of his career," said Verbeek.

"But this is an injury that could be dealt with efficiently."

Verbeek said Kewell is looking forward to coming back for the Socceroos as soon as possible.

"I know from talking to Harry that he is very happy with the medical treatment he has received and he is hoping to be on the park ahead of schedule."

Kewell is expected to return to Istanbul after enjoying a festive season break with his family at home in Australia.
