Katrina Gorry reflects on her starting debut for the Matildas in which she scored her first national goal.
Katrina Gorry has looked back on her starting debut for the Matildas against the Netherlands with mixed emotions. While the midfielder was elated to open her national goal account when she fired in an equaliser, ultimately the Matildas lost 3-1 in the opening match of their European tour.
The midfielder was a late inclusion in the starting side after Servet Uzunlar suffered a knee injury in training the day before the match. Gorry certainly made the most of the opportunity when she lashed a left footed volley past the Dutch goalkeeper in the second-half.
Gorry was excited to get the opportunity to make her starting debut against quality European opposition and hoped her performance would be enough to retain her spot in the side for the remaining two games of their tour.
“It was hard having a short time to prepare but I was waiting for a spot to come up. I-ve always wanted to start an international game especially against one of the best teams in Europe,” said Gorry.
“I don-t know what I was thinking when I put the ball in the back of the net. It was my left foot, so I didn-t want to air swing so I just put a lot of pace on it. It was good to come away with a goal, it-s my first one, so was pretty exciting.”
The Matildas continue their European tour against Dutch club side Ado den Haag before taking on France in their second international at Stade Jean-Bouin in Paris this weekend.
