Former Socceroos duo announced as new Hyundai A-League Head Coaches

Former Socceroos Richard Garcia and Carl Veart have been announced as the head coaches of Perth Glory and Adelaide United.

Garcia, who featured for Australia on 17 occasions, has penned a two-year deal with the Glory after having worked as an Assistant First Team Coach and Head Youth Coach of the PGFC Academy since retiring in 2017.

The 39-year-old represented the Socceroos at the FIFA World Cup 2010, played for Hull City in the Premier League, and after over 50 Hyundai A-League appearances for Glory, is now excited to take charge of his hometown club.

“I’m extremely happy to have been given this opportunity,” said Garcia.

“Being a proud WA boy and having played for and captained Perth Glory, it’s a great honour to now be in a position to take the club forward.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our loyal Members and fans for their ongoing support during what has been a very testing year due to the issues caused by COVID-19 and I hope we will have them back at HBF Park roaring us on in the near future.”

Meanwhile, Veart, has signed a deal as Head Coach of Adelaide for the next two Hyundai A-League seasons after serving as the Reds’ interim boss for the last five regular-season games of the 2019/20 season.

The 17-time Socceroo helped Adelaide go undefeated during his time in charge at the backend of last season, and is now excited to take over as Head Coach more permanently.

“This is a wonderful feeling for me, knowing that I’ve been given the honour of coaching this football club," said Veart.

“As I’ve said on many occasions, Adelaide United holds a special place in my heart and I cannot wait to get started.

“Being involved with the Club during the early days, it’s a unique feeling to be stepping into this position, but one that I believe I’m ready for.

“After being an Assistant Coach for the majority of last season and then being trusted to take the team following the COVID-19 break, this is definitely a proud moment for me and my family.

“I’m looking forward to everything this role will bring and hope the members and people of South Australia support us again in what will be a big 2020/21 season.”
