Degenek’s Red Star to face Bayern and Tottenham in Champions League

Milos Degenek will face some of the best attacks in Europe after his Red Star Belgrade were drawn in a tough group for the UEFA Champions League on Friday morning (AEST).

The Serbian champions have been pitted against German giants Bayern Munich, last season’s beaten finalists Tottenham and Greek powerhouse Olympiacos in Group B.

It means the Caltex Socceroos defender, who scored a crucial goal to help his team get past Young Boys in the last qualification round, will go head-to-head with some of world football’s best strikers.

Bayern Munich boast the likes of Polish star Robert Lewandowski and Philippe Coutinho, while Spurs are led by England captain Harry Kane and Korea Republic whiz Son Hueng-Min.

But Degenek is accustomed to taking on the best, with his Crvena zvezda team defeating eventual winners Liverpool in last season’s group stage.

Red Star open their campaign with a trip to Munich to take on Bayern on Thursday, September 19 (kick-off 5.00am AEST).

Meanwhile, injured Australian goalkeeper Danny Vukovic’s Genk are set to take on Liverpool, Napoli and Red Bull Salzburg in Group E.

Vukovic is currently sidelined after rupturing his Achilles tendon in July.

Genk are back in the Champions League after winning the title in Belgium for the first time in eight years last season.

And Vukovic was a big part of their success, keeping 14 clean sheets in 37 league matches.

Genk’s opening game is also on the road, in Austria against Salzburg on Wednesday, September 18 (kick-off 5.00am AEST).
