Qantas Socceroo midfielder Tim Cahill played as a lone attacker for Everton and came up trumps in the dying minutes, to give his side a 1-0 win away at Manchester City overnight.

Cahill, who had not scored in the Premier League since September, headed a corner home from six yards out, to keep Everton 7th and in the race for a place in Europe.

The former Millwall player, was forced to play as a lone striker, with Everton forward stocks completely diminished by injury and proved a handful for the City defence.

Twice in the second half, Cahill was close to scoring, a header going wide and a timely interception from Pablo Zabaleta denying him as he was to set to score.

But there was no denying him at the death when he met Leon Osman-s corner kick and he rose and powered his header home for the match-winner.

Meanwhile Mark Schwarzer kept another clean sheet for Fulham Athletic in a 0-0 draw away at Stoke City, while things go from bad to worse for Blackburn Rovers as they lost their sixth straight league match 3-0 to Wigan Athletic and sit second from the bottom on the table. Brett Emerton played a full game, while good news for Vince Grella, who made it onto the bench after a lengthy lay-off with injury, but did not see any game time.
