Cahill And Garcia Kick Off 2005 With Goals

Qantas Socceroo Tim Cahill and Richard Garcia started the year 2005 on a high note with goals in their New Years Day clashes, although Cahill would have much rather seen his side win against Tottenham instead of getting thrashed 5-2 at White Hart Lane.

Cahill (pictured right) brought Everton back into the game just on half time with a great strike from the middle of the penalty area. It was the midfielder-s fourth goal of the campaign and followed up from his goal on Boxing Day.

However Tottenham raced to a 5-1 lead in the second half before Everton scored a late consolation goal. Everton still remain fourth in the league, despite the loss.

It wasn-t a good day for Aussie players in the Premier League, with all that played tasting defeat. Tony Popovic was back in the Crystal Palace side, but they fell 3-1 away at Fulham; Lucas Neill and Brett Emerton both played in Blackburn-s 1-0 away loss at Aston Villa; Stan Lazaridis was also back in the Birmingham City side that lost 2-1 away at Newcastle, while Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough) was unable to prevent a Manchester United win at the Riverside Stadium.

Garcia scored his fifth goal of the year, as Colchester started the year with a comprehensive 3-0 win away at Swindon. Garcia scored Colchester-s third goal two minutes after the break with a low shot from the edge of the area.
