Brandon O’Neill replaces de Silva in Olyroos squad

Sydney FC midfielder Brandon O’Neill has been included in the 23-man Olyroo squad for the AFC U-23 Championship Doha 2016 after Dutch Erevidisie side Roda JV Kerkrade knocked back Australia’s request to release Daniel de Silva for the tournament.

O’Neill’s inclusion in the Olyroo squad to play in the final round of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Qatar from 14-30 January is a good reward for a storming start to the Hyundai A-League.

“It‘s unfortunate that Daniel de Silva wasn’t released by his club but Brandon showed some tremendous form in the opening rounds of the A-League and he will add to the quality of our squad,” said Olyroos Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar.

Vidmar challenges Olyroos as Rio qualifiers loom

The Olyroos will head to Dubai for a seven day camp before the opening match in Group D against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 14 January at the Grand Hamad Stadium. The Olyroos also play Vietnam (17 January) and Jordan (20 January) with the top two teams progressing to the quarter finals.

The top three teams will qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games Football Tournament.
