So, who is Jake Brimmer? And why are we likely to see this headline again?
The teenage Liverpool midfielder is now the name is on everyone’s lips following his starring performance for the Aussie youngsters in their 4-2 win over Japan on Wednesday at the AFC Under-16 Championships in Thailand.
In an exciting sign for the future of the national, Brimmer showed he has genuine set-piece quality by curling in two sensational free-kicks for Tony Vidmar’s side.
While for many it’s the first glimpse of his undoubted quality, the 16-year-old has always been earmarked for big things which is why EPL giants Liverpool signed him earlier this year after they saw him during their visit to Melbourne in 2013.
Brimmer, who has a Maltese background, is from the Melbourne City of Lilyfield.
The talented teenager spent a few years working at the Rowville Sports Academy while also cutting his teeth playing for his home club Nunawading City (a club that's produced a fair few players who've gone on).
But it was while playing for the Victorian NTC (National Training Centre) squad at Moreland last July that Brimmer’s life would change forever.
Spotted by Liverpool scout Barry Hunter, Brimmer was offered a trial with the Reds and after impressing their youth coaches was signed to a three-year deal in April.
It was a dream-come-true for the youngster, who is a die-hard Liverpool fan.
Brimmer is doing well in the youth set-up at Liverpool and his main goal is to one-day break into Brendan Rodgers’ first-team.
And if he keeps knocking in free-kicks like he did this week, it’s only a matter of time.
