Unfortunately for Grella, Rovers were 0-2 down when he came on and by full-time Liverpool had scored another two goals to inflict a 4-0 defeat on Blackburn which places them four points above the relegation zone. Middlesborough goalkeeper Brad Jones had a morale boosting 3-1 win over Hull City which has given them hope of avoiding relegation, although they are still in second last place on the ladder. Adrian Leijer was on the bench for Norwich City's trip to play Swansea City but David Carney did not make the team sheet. The Canaries lost 2-1 and Leijer did not take the field. Patrick Kisnorbo was on the bench for Leicester City's 3-1 win over Hereford and the same goes for Adam Federici whose Reading lost 1-0 to Sheffield United.

In the English League One, Neil Kilkenny continued to start for Leeds United as they kept their hopes of a play-off position and possible promotion to the Championship alive with a hard fought 1-0 win over Stockport County. Chris Coyne watched from the bench as Colchester United lost 1-2 to Leyton Orient.

In the Italian Serie A, Mark Bresciano came on at half time for Palermo with the score 2-0 in favour of hosts Internazionale. Bresciano assisted his help his team to a dramatic 2-2 draw at the San Siro.

In the Scottish Premier League, Scott McDonald's Celtic drew 1-all away to Heart of Midlothian which gives them only a slender 1 point lead over rivals Rangers with one round to play. Trent McLenahan played a full match for Hamilton Academical in their 0-1 home loss to Dundee United, whilst Danny Invincible was part of Kilmarnock's 3-0 win over Falkirk.

In the Turkish Super Lig, Harry Kewell was substituted close to full time in the Istanbul derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbache. The match ended in a nil-all draw in front of a capacity crowd at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium. Michael Petkovic kept a clean sheet in Sivasspor's 1-0 win over Antalyaspor which puts them at the top of the table by a point.
