Aussies Abroad Preview: Taggart looking for J League Cup glory, Subway Socceroos meet in Scotland

It's another huge weekend of Aussies Abroad action as Adam Taggart chases J League Cup glory while a number of Subway Socceroos face off against each other in Scotland.

Asia

Starting in Japan, where Adam Taggart could feature in Cerezo Osaka's J. League Cup final matchup against Sanfrecce Hiroshima on Saturday at 3:05pm (AEDT). 

Cerezo won the competition for the first time in 2017. They finished as runners-up last season, losing 2-0 defeat to Nagoya Grampus.

Cerezo are in fourth place in the J League standings, while Sanfrecce are third, leading Cerezo by four points.

But Cerezo enter the match in form after securing a 5-1 aggregate win over the Urawa Reds in the semifinals.


In the J2 League, Mitch Duke's Fagiano Okayama finish their season against Tokyo Verdy on Sunday at 4pm (AEDT) as they prepare for a third place finish and a play off with the third-bottom team from the J1 League for promotion. 

Elsewhere in the J2 League, Thomas Deng could be in action when Albirex Niigata take on Machida Zelvia on Sunday at 4pm (AEDT). 

In the K1 League, Harrison Delbridge's Incheon United face Jeonbuk on Sunday at 5pm (AEDT) in a play-off as the Final Rounds wrap up. 

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where Aaron Mooy could be in action when Celtic host Cameron Devlins's Heart of Midlothian on Saturday at 10:30pm (AEDT). 

Celtic will be hoping to continue their impressive form in the Scottish Premiership after a 6-1 victory over Hibernian in their last outing while Hearts will look to bounce back from defeat against Aberdeen. 

Mooy enjoyed one of his finest performances since moving to Celtic in the big win over Hibs. The Subway Socceroos midfielder started for just the third time, played the full game and picked up two assists in a more advanced No. 8 role. 


Mooy also started and played 72 minutes in Celtic's 4-0 Scottish League Cup Quarter-final win over Motherwell on Thursday.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Aziz Behich will face off against fellow Subway Socceroos Ryan Strain and Keanu Baccus when Dundee United meet St Mirren on Sunday at 1am (AEDT). 

Dundee are undefeated in their last three matches as they look to climb from the bottom end of the table while St Mirren sit in fifth. 

Behich also started and played 90 minutes in Dundee United's Scottish League Cup Quarter-final 2-1 loss to Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

Martin Boyle will also be in action when Hibernian look to bounce back with a victory over Ryan McGowan's St Johnstone on Saturday at 5:30am (AEDT).

In England, Tom Rogic will be hoping for to make another Championship appearance when West Bromwich Albion face Millwall on Sunday at 1am (AEDT). Rogic also featured in West Brom's 2-0 loss to Bristol City h by coming off the bench in the 59th minute on Wednesday.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Kenny Dougall's Blackpool also take on Preston on Saturday at 10:30pm (AEDT). Dougall also played 90 minutes and scored a goal against Hull City in a 3-1 win on Thursday.

Dougall crashed home a fierce near-post volley from a perfectly flighted clipped cross to equalise but Hull ran away with the game in the second half. 


Riley McGree's Middlesbrough will also face off against Huddersfield on Sunday at 1am (AEDT) in the Championship. McGree also came off the bench in the 82nd minute in a 4-1 win against Wigan Athletic on Thursday.

Bailey Wright's Sunderland also take on Burnley on Sunday at 1am (AEDT). Wright was an unused substitute as Sunderland lost 2-0 against Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday.

In injury news, Harry Souttar returned to the pitch for the first time since suffering an ACL injury on the 11th of November 2021 on Monday by starting and playing the first half for Stoke City’s U21s against the Nottingham Forest U21s.


In Olyroos Abroad news, goalkeeper Nick Bilokapic could feature on the bench when Huddersfield face Middlesbrough at 1am (AEDT) on Sunday. Bilokapic was also an unused substitute in Huddersfield's 1-0 loss against Preston on Wednesday.

In League Two, goalkeeper Jacob Chapman could feature for Salford City when they face Stockport on Sunday at 1am (AEDT). Chapman was an unused substitute as Salford lost to Rochdale on Wednesday.....

Lachlan Brook could also appear in League Two as Crewe Alexandra take on Doncaster on Sunday at 1am (AEDT). Brook came off the bench in the 77th minute against Tranmere on Wednesday.

Europe

Starting in Germany, where Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe could be in action when St. Pauli take on Arminia on Sunday at 5:30am (AEDT). 

Irvine and Metcalfe both started and played 90 minutes in St Pauli's  2-1 loss against SC Freiburg in the DFB-Pokal Cup second round on Thursday..

In Denmark, Mat Ryan's FC Copenhagen take on FC Midtjylland on Sunday at 1am (AEDT). Ryan started and stood tall in a shootout against Hobro to help Copenhagen advance in the Danish Cup on Thursday.

Elsewhere in Denmark, Joel King's Odense Boldklub face Lyngby on Saturday at 4am (AEDT) as they look to bounce back from three consecutive draws.

In Serie B, Fran Karačić and Brescia Calcio face Venezia on Saturday at 11pm (AEDT). 

In France, Denis Genreau's Toulouse FC face Strasbourg on Monday at 12am (AEDT) as they look to make it two Ligue 1 wins in a row. 

In Belgium, Jason Davidson and James Jeggo's K.A.S. Eupen face off against Mechelen on Sunday at 3:15am (AEDT). 

In Spain, Awer Mabil could be in action when Cádiz CF face Rayo Vallecano on Sunday at 11pm (AEDT). Mabil was an unused substitute in Cádiz's 0-0 draw with Real Betis on Thursday.

Tyrese Francois' HNK Gorica face NK Lokomotiva on Sunday at 12am (AEDT) in the Croatian Football League. 

In Olyroos abroad news, Alou Kuol could also feature for VfB Stuttgart II when they take on Astoria Walldorf on Sunday at 11pm (AEDT).

  • In Austria, James Holland's FK Austria Wien take on LASK on Monday at 2am (AEDT) in the Austrian Bundesliga. 
  • In France's Ligue 2, Alex Gersbach could be in action for Grenoble Foot 38 against Valenciennes on Sunday at 4am (AEDT). 
  • In Germany, John Iredale's SV Wehen Wiesbaden take on 1860 Munich on Saturday at 11pm (AEDT) in the 3. Liga.
  • In Croatia, Anthony Kalik's Hajduk Split take on Dinamo Zagreb on Saturday at 3am (AEDT) while Deni Juric's HNK Gorica face NK Lokomotiva on Sunday at 12am (AEDT) in the Croatian Football League.
  • In Greece, Apostolos Stamatelopoulos could be in action for PAS Giannina against Ionikos on Monday at 12am (AEDT) while Bruce Kamau's OFI Crete FC face Lamia on Tuesday at 4am (AEDT).

United Kingdom

  • In the England Championship, Callum Elder's Hull City face Rotherham on Sunday at 1am (AEDT).
  • Massimo Luongo could feature for Middlesbrough against Huddersfield on Sunday at 1am (AEDT).
  • In League One, Caleb Watts could feature for Morecambe against Barnsley on on Sunday at 1am (AEDT).

  • In the Israeli Premier League, Nikita Rukavytsya's Maccabi Haifa will be in action against H. Kiryat Shmona on Sunday at 4:15am (AEDT). 
  • Stefan Mauk could also be in action in the J2 League when Fagiano Okayama face Tokyo Verdy on Sunday at 4pm (AEDT).
  • Giancarlo Gallifuoco could also become the first Australian to win the AFC Cup if Kuala Lumpur can defeat Al-Seeb on Saturday at 10pm (AEDT) in the AFC Cup Final.
