Aussies Abroad Preview: Scottish Premiership & English Championship seasons begin

This weekend a number of our Socceroos and U23's will be back in action as the Scottish Premiership and English Championship seasons kick off, along with the DFB-Pokal Cup in Germany. 

It's another big weekend for our Aussies abroad as the Scottish Premiership and English Championship, League One and League Two campaigns begin while DFB-Pokal Cup begins in Germany.

United Kingdom

Starting in Scotland, where a number of our Socceroos and U23s will begin their Scottish Premiership campaigns. 

Having made his pre-season debut with a cameo off the bench against Norwich, Aaron Mooy will be hoping to make his competitive debut when Celtic host Aberdeen in Round 1 of the Scottish Premiership on Monday at 1:30am (AEST). 

After clinching the title by finishing four points ahead of Rangers in their last campaign, Celtic head into the new season as the bookmakers’ favourites to win the title for the second successive year.

Socceroos fullback Aziz Behich will also be hoping to pull on Dundee United's colours, after sealing a two-year deal with the Scottish club. Dundee travel to Kilmarnock on Sunday at 12 am (AEST) as they look to improve on their top four finish and gather form ahead of their UEFA Conference League qualifier.

Elsewhere in Scotland, Kye Rowles will also be hoping to make his Scottish Premiership debut alongside Nathaniel Atkinson as Heart of Midlothian FC kick off their season by hosting Ross County on Sunday at 12am (AEST). Last season, the Jambos finished third in the Scottish Premiership, their highest finish since 2015/16.

Having also recently secured a move to the league, Ryan McGowan will kick off his campaign for St Johnstone on Sunday at 12am (AEST) against Lewis Miller's Hibernian. 

In England, Riley McGree will be looking to help Middlesbrough kick off their Championship campaign in the best possible fashion as the Socceroos midfielder aims to fulfil his dream of achieving promotion and playing in the Premier League. 

McGree has excelled in pre-season playing in the number ten role so he will be looking to continue his form when Middlesbrough host West Brom on Sunday at 2:30 am (AEST). 


Kenny Dougall's Blackpool host Reading on Sunday at 12am (AEST) as they look to improve on their 16th place finish in the last Championship campaign. 

Having secured promotion through the play-offs last season, Bailey Wright's Sunderland will also be in action when they host Coventry on Sunday at 9pm (AEST). 

In Olyroos Abroad news, Nicholas Bilokapic and Jacob Chapman could feature in Huddersfield's squad to take on Burnley on Saturday at 5am (AEST). 

In League One, Jay Rich-Baghuelou will be aiming to shake off a minor injury and line up for Accrington Stanley when they host Charlton on Sunday at 12am (AEST). 

Having recently secured a loan move from Brentford B, Lachlan Brook could make his League Two debut when Crewe Alexandra FC travel to Rochdale on Sunday at 12am (AEST). 


Meanwhile, Tyrese Francois will continue his pre-season with Fulham when they host Villarreal CF at 12am (AEST) on Monday at Craven Cottage. 

Cameron Peupion will also be in action for Brighton & Hove Albion's under-21s on Friday when they round of their pre-season with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa.

Europe

In Germany, where Jackson Irvine and Connor Metcalfe will be hoping to continue their unbeaten start to the season when St. Pauli play Straelen in DFB-Pokal Cup action on Saturday at 9pm (AEST). 

Having brushed aside FC Astoria Walldorf 5-0 in their final pre-season friendly, Ajdin Hrustic’s Eintracht Frankfurt also kick off their DFB-Pokal Cup campaign with a matchup against FC Magdeburg on Tuesday at 4:45 am (AEST). 

In Belgium, Jason Davidson's K.A.S. Eupen continue the Belgian Pro League season when they host Club Brugge on Monday at 12am (AEST).  James Jeggo had knee surgery in the summer and will have to wait another 3-4 weeks until he returns to the squad. 


In the Danish Superliga, Joel King's Odense Boldklub will be looking to record their first win of the season when they host FC Midtjylland on Saturday at 3am (AEST). 

In Spain, Maty Ryan will be hoping to get his first minutes of the pre-season as Real Sociedad take on Bournemouth on Sunday at 12am (AEST). 

Awer Mabil will also be in action in Cadiz's pre-season friendly against LOSC Lille on Saturday at 3am (AEST). 

In France, Denis Genreau’s Toulouse FC play their last warm-up match against Clermont Foot 63 on Sunday at 2am (AEST). 

In the Netherlands, Danny Vukovic's NEC Nijmegen play their final pre-season tie against Heracles on Saturday at 3am (AEST). 

Having featured in Brescia Calcio's friendly against Lecco on Thursday, Fran Karacic will also be in action again when Brescia host Mantova in their last pre-season friendly on Sunday at 2am (AEST). 


In Olyroos abroad news, Alou Kuol will be hoping to translate his pre-season form to the DFB-Pokal Cup when VfB Stuttgart kick off their campaign against Dynamo Dresden on Saturday at 2am (AEST). 

Having featured in FC Utrecht's 1-0 loss to AEK Athens on Wednesday, Josh Rawlins will be in action in Utrecht's last friendly against Shakhtar Donetsk on Sunday at 12:30am (AEST). 

Asia

In the J2 League, Mitch Duke’s Fagiano Okayama host JEF United on Saturday at 8pm (AEST) as they look to record back-to-back victories. 

The United States

Finishing with Major League Soccer, where Milos Degenek will be hoping to regain his starting spot when Columbus Crew host Charlotte on Sunday at 9:00am (AEST). 

Degenek was an unused substitute in The Crews’ last match against New England as he works his way back from injury.
