Socceroos in the A-League: Goodwin & Maclaren continue scoring runs

It was an important weekend of action for our Socceroos in clubland, with form and momentum key in the build-up to Thursday's FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Vietnam.

Kicking off this week's review at home in the A-League Men's where Melbourne City quartet Connor Metcalfe, Marco Tilio, Mathew Leckie and Jamie Maclaren continued their red hot form, all starting in Gosford on Sunday. 

Maclaren wore the captain's armband and netted his fifth goal of the season in a 3-1 win over Central Coast Mariners - for whom Kye Rowles impressed playing a full 90 minutes in the heart of defence. 

Up in Brisbane, Craig Goodwin celebrated his Socceroos return with a brace in Adelaide United's 3-1 victory over the Brisbane Roar. 

Elsewhere, Andrew Redmayne started between the sticks while defenders Rhyan Grant and Joel King played 78 minutes in Sydney FC's 2-1 loss to  Perth Glory, continuing the Sky Blues' mixed start to the campaign.

Switching overseas to Germany, where Jackson Irvine and FC St. Pauli were coming off  a 2-1 triumph over Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund, but unfortunately couldn't continue their winning ways.

Irvine played 81 minutes in midfield and was booked before being replaced in the 2-1 defeat to Hamburger SV, a result that leaves them two points off top spot in 2. Bundesliga.

Recently-recalled forward Brandon Borrello started for Dynamo Dresden, playing 63 minutes of their scoreless draw with Hannover 96. 

Staying in Germany, Ajdin Hrustic’s Eintracht Frankfurt lost 2-0 to Arminia with the Aussie coming on in the 87th minute.


To Scotland, where Tom Rogic played a full 90 minutes in Celtic's 2-1 win over Scottish third division side Alloa Atheltic int the 4th round of the Scottish Cup.

In Italy’s Serie B, Fran Karačić came on in the 70th minute in Brescia's 1-1 draw with Ternana which keeps them one point off league leaders Pisa.

In Belgium, central defender Trent Sainsbury was solid in the heart of defense for KV Kortrjk's 1-1 draw with Eupen on Sunday morning.

Over in Greece, Jimmy Jeggo played 70 minutes of Aris Thessaloniki's 0-0 draw with Lamia, while in Turkey, Aziz Behich started for Giresunspor in their 3-1 defeat at home to Alanyaspor.
