Aussies abroad: Irvine's history making win in Scotland

Caltex Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine has played a key role in Ross County winning the Scottish League Cup on Sunday, setting up the first goal against Hibernian.

Irvine and Co. claimed the first major piece of silverware in Ross County's 87-year history, as they defeated Hibernian 2-1 at Hampden Park in Glasgow thanks to Alex Schalk's 90th-minute strike.

It was Ross County's first appearance in a Scottish League Cup final, with the club having lost their sole Scottish FA Cup final in 2010.

Irvine played a full game in central midfield and put the Highland-based club on track for victory when he stole possession in the 25th minute, surged forward and then released Michael Gardyne, who rounded the goalkeeper to score.

Hibernian would equalise just before half-time but Ross County eventually triumphed when Schalk bundled the ball home in the final minute of regulation.

On the continent, Brad Jones helped NEC Nijmegen to an impressive 2-2 draw away to Ajax, as his side claimed a late share of the points via Christian Santos' 82nd-minute goal.

Jones played a full game between the sticks for the visitors, as NEC maintained their bid for a Europa League play-off berth.
