Aussies Abroad: Degenek scores again in Japan

Caltex Socceroos defender Milos Degenek has scored for the second game in a row as Yokohama F.Marinos recorded a big win in the J-League.

After helping Ange Postecoglou’s side to a win in the J-League Cup in midweek, Degenek rounded out the scoring as his side cruised to a 5-2 win over V-Varen Nagasaki.

A corner from the left was swung in to the centre of the box, with Degenek holding off the attention of a defender to power a header into the net.

After a difficult start to the campaign, Yokohama is now up to 12th spot on the ladder with four wins, five draws and six losses from 15 games.

Degenek, who will now head off for the pre-FIFA World Cup training camp with the Caltex Socceroos, was given a huge ovation from the home fans after the match.

Meanwhile in Korea, defender Dylan McGowan also got through 90 minutes as his Gangwon FC prevailed 1-0 over Gyeongnam.

The result has helped his side jump up to sixth spot on the K-League table midway through Round 14.

Elsewhere, and it was the final day of the season in the Swiss Super League, although both Tomi Juric (Luzern) and Trent Sainsbury (Grasshopper Zurich) both missed the matches for the respective clubs.

Juric’s Luzern ended the campaign with a 2-2 draw against FC Basel, while Sainsbury was rested after nine straight games as his side lost 2-1 against Young Boys.

The pair’s focus will soon switch to the Caltex Socceroos and getting into camp in Turkey with the FIFA World Cup just over three weeks away.
