Aussie defender's attacking role in Europa League

He's one of the Caltex Socceroos' full backs but in the Europa League overnight, Alex Gersbach played 90 minutes as a winger in Rosenborg's 2-1 loss at Austria Vienna.

And Gersbach almost set up what would have been the opening goal in the first half. 

However, his cross from the left was just beyond striker Christian Gytkjaer at the back post.

After the hosts scored twice in three minutes early in the second half, Rosenborg gave themselves hope of progressing to the group stage when Tore Reginiussen scored in stoppage time.

The former AIS and Sydney FC star was selected in the Caltex Socceroos squad this week for two World Cup qualifiers next month along. 

Fighting for the Socceroo left back spot in the games against Iraq on September 1 in Perth and UAE away is another rising star, Bournemouth's Brad Smith.
