Socceroo coach Ange Postecoglou also backed Melbourne Victory striker Archie Thompson to “fight” his way back after suffering a potentially serious knee injury in Tuesday night’s Westfield FFA Cup quarter-final win over Adelaide United.
Victory are sweating on scans for the evergreen striker, with fears Thompson may have ruptured his ACL and could be set for 12 months on the sidelines.
“He [Thompson] has been over the first 10 years of the A-League one of the biggest stories,” Postecoglou said.
“He was a fantastic contributor to the Socceroos as well. Obviously when I came in I changed things a bit but it shouldn’t be forgotten he played a pretty key role in getting us to the last World Cup.
“And even last night when he was warming up he still has the crowd’s attention…he’s that kind of player and it’s not what you want to see for someone like him."
Thompson later posted a message saying he was set on fighting back from the injury.
