Ange's final message before winner-takes-all playoff v Honduras

A calm Ange Postecogloou says the approach won’t change when the Caltex Socceroos face Honduras on Wednesday night in their second leg intercontinental playoff in Sydney.

In front of a large media contingent at the final media call before the match, Postecoglou said the permutations around the result were inconsequential.

Australia drew 0-0 last Saturday in Honduras. A 1-0 win would be enough for a fourth consecutive World Cup for the Socceroos.

"One goal may be enough," he said. 

"But our approach is we start aggressively and as long as the game goes – 90 minutes or 120 – we’ll keep going at the same level. 

"And it’ll be up to the opposition to try and stop us and keep up with us. We’ve never sat back after scoring and never changed anything when we’ve conceded.

"In games like tomorrow, that helps. The players aren’t focussing on a scoreline. 

"They’re focussing our football, our tempo for as long as the game goes.

"And we usually come out on top."

Postecoglou said he had a full squad to choose from with no injuries out of the first leg.

The Hondurans know an early goal would put the pressure on the hosts but Postecoglou remains confident the game plan will find success on the night. 

"We forced them to defend [in the first leg in San Pedro Sula] and still played our football, and that’s going to be the key tomorrow night," Postecolou added.

"Tomorrow night is us dictating the game and if we do that – as we’ve done in the past – we’ll be hard to stop.

"This pitch [at Stadium Australia] will suit us. It didn’t the other day [in Honduras].

"If we can play like that on a pitch like that I reckon we can do a whole lot better on a pitch that does suit us."
