Tim Cahill is impressed with the crop of young talent in Australian football but has challenged them to be more consistent for the Socceroos.
Now in his fourth FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, Cahill has been delivering at both club and international level for the best part of a decade.
Cahill is the most senior member this current Socceroos squad which is blessed with some gifted young players.
The likes of Tom Rogic, Massimo Luongo, Trent Sainsbury, Mat Leckie, Aaron Mooy and Jason Davidson are in the early stages of their careers but are tipped for big things.
The Shanghai Shenhua striker likes what he sees from those players but says it’s important not to get too carried away.
“The problem is a player scores one goal, he’s a superstar for two weeks then the next week he’s forgotten about.
“For us they need to get consistency on doing well for the Socceroos on a regular basis.
"None of them can really be assessed properly until after 30-40 games domestically and internationally.
“That’s the key because my whole life I’ve been involved in World Cup campaigns and Socceroos and domestic achievements and unless it’s consistent, it means nothing.
“For any sort of player it’s about professionalism and how many times they can back their camps up, how many games they play in a week and what noises are the making overseas or in the A-League and they use that momentum to get better.”
