Caltex Socceroo thrilled with Danish debut

Chris Ikonomidis hopes his "fantastic" debut for AGF is just the start of a successful loan stint at the Danish club.

The Caltex Socceroos winger made his bow for AGF on Monday, coming off the bench in a 3-1 win at home over FC Nordsjaelland and immediately impressing with his attacking play from the left wing.

Ikonomidis took three shots during his 25 minutes on the pitch at Ceres Park and hopes to continue making an attacking impact at AGF after securing a loan move to the Aarhus-based club from Lazio on the final day of the recent transfer window.

"Yeah, I always try and make an impact off the bench when I come on, running as hard as I can, putting pressure on the other team and fortunately we did that and got a few goals in the end," he told AGF TV.

Ikonomidis added: "It was fantastic to get onto the field and play with my team-mates in this beautiful club."

The 21-year-old, who has joined fellow Australian Mustafa Amini in Aarhus, insisted he can get even better after being asked if AGF fans can get used to that type of performance from him.

"I always look to improve, so hopefully it's an Ikonomidis even better in the future," he said.

"It was my first game - 25 minutes - and I'm still understanding Danish football but I think I can give a lot to this team and help this club reach good things."

Having made just one senior appearance for Lazio since moving from Atalanta in 2013, Ikonomidis has joined AGF in a bid to secure regular game-time and retain his position in Ange Postecoglou's Socceroos squad.

Ikonomidis sat on the bench in Australia's two World Cup qualifiers earlier this month as the Socceroos defeated Iraq and United Arab Emirates.

Last season, the Sydney-born winger spent the second half of the campaign at Salernitana, scoring one goal and notching one assist in his 14 matches in Serie B.

AGF will visit Silkeborg in the Danish Superliga on Saturday.
