Socceroos slide in FIFA rankings

The Socceroos have slipped to 84th in the World in the latest FIFA rankings released today, dropping five places since mid-August.

The Socceroos' 3-2 win over Saudi Arabia 10 days ago was not enough to prevent the slide and they now sit two places behind the Saudis.

Ange Postecoglou's men have faced their most difficult run of matches in recent memory after playing six games against nations in the World's top 21 in 2014.

Australia's horror World Cup draw which included 2010 World Champions Spain, European powerhouse Holland and South American's Chile highlights the quality the Socceroos have faced.

The Socceroos will have an opportunity to climb the rankings next month when they face fellow AFC nations Qatar and United Arab Emirates before travelling to Japan in November.

Australia will also be eyeing a deep run in January's Asian Cup on home soil where they are one of the tournament favourites and will again be looking to boost their ranking.

Iran are the top ranked team in Asia at 44th ahead of Japan (48th), Uzbekistan (58th) and Korea Republic (63rd).

Unsurprisingly, World Champions Germany sit atop the World rankings ahead of Argentina and the Netherlands.
