Qantas Futsalroos star Luke Haydon has signed for current Brazilian National League Futsal Champions Carlos Barbosa, in what is a major breakthrough for the sport in this country.

Luke is believed to be the first player from Australia to sign with a Brazilian Serie A futsal team and believed to have signed a six-month contract.

He left in January to begin pre-season with Carlos Barbosa, a city of one million people in the south of Brazil. The team is sponsored by Dal Ponte, who also sponsor Luke-s team in Australia, the Dal Ponte Vikings in Queensland.

Luke, who will be known as Lucky while in Brazil, first came to the attention of Carlos Barbosa, during the Australian teams tour in Brazil, in preparation for the Futsal World Championships held in November in Chinese Taipei last year.

The 22-year old has made five appearances for the Qantas Futsalroos and is considered one of the local players to have a big future in the sport.

Carlos Barbosa will play their first match of the major pre-season tournament in Jaraguá do Sul today, with the champions of each state conference coming together.

If Luke proves successful in his stint in Brazil, it could open the doors for more Australian players to play in Brazil.
