Olyroos go down to China PR

A superb headed goal from Dutch-based Travis Cooper wasn’t enough as the Olyroos went down 3-1 to China PR on Sunday night in the Aussies' second match in Wuhan.

The home side took the lead after just 11 minutes through Xie Pengfei.

But the Olyroos hit back on 22 minutes to level the game. Newcastle Jets’ Andrew Hoole provided the cross for Cooper and the VVV Venlo player made no mistake with a smart header.

The home side then made it 2-1 early in the second half through Wu Xinghan who burst through the centre of the Aussie defence before slotting home.

And it was 3-1 on 75 minutes as China PR opened up the Aussie defence again.

The Olyroos are in China for a four-team tournament featuring home nation, Brazil and Korea Republic.

Their first game on Friday night saw the Aussies draw 2-2 with Brazil.

Hero of that game was Corey Gameiro who scored the first goal and won the penalty converted by Mustafa Amini.

Gameiro was on the bench for the China PR game as a precaution after he received a bruised foot following the Brazil game.

Brazil beat Korea Republic 3-0 in the other game on Sunday night.

The Olyroo squad consists of 12 players from the Hyundai A-League as well as 10 overseas-based players.

This will be the first time that the Olyroos have assembled since the AFC U-22 Championship in January where they were knocked out of the quarter-finals by Saudi Arabia.

Coach Aurelio Vidmar is looking forward to working with the players as he begins preparations for the next AFC U-22 Championship campaign which will double as the qualification tournament for the 2016 Olympic Games Football Tournament.

The Olyroos will face Korea Republic U-22 in their final match of the tournament on Tuesday 18 November.

All matches are played at the Wuhan Sports Centre, Wuhan, China.
