Mile Jedinak’s all-action performance couldn’t prevent Aston Villa from suffering a 3-1 loss to Reading in England’s Championship overnight.

The Caltex Socceroos skipper was heavily involved at Villa Park but two second half goals sealed the Royals’ return to form.

Trailing 1-0 early, Jedinak came close to an immediate equaliser when his deflected effort was well kept out by Reading goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi.

The visitors went 2-1 ahead just after half-time with the big Aussie almost contributing to a second Villa equaliser, only for striker Scott Hogan to sky the cutback.

Jedinak shifted from midfield to defence late in the second-half and found time for a scuffle with two-goal Reading forward Joseph Mendes.

Villa’s first defeat in six matches leaves the pre-season promotion candidates stuck in 12th with four matches to come.

Steve Bruce's side now face a quick turnaround for their trip to playoff hopefuls Fulham on Monday night (AEST).
