Last time the Socceroos played Greece

With the Socceroos facing Greece in early June, we recall a magical night at the 'G when the Greeks last played in Australia ten years ago.

Socceroos coach and Greek star set for reunion

In an unforgettable farewell friendly in front of a staggering crowd of  just over 95,000 fans at the iconic Melbourne venue, Australia left to continue their World Cup preparations buoyed by a 1-0 win over the then-reigning European champions.

The scorer was Melbourne boy Joe Skoko, who popped up to hit a curling, looping volley past Greek keeper Nikopolidis in the 16th minute.

And overall, you'd have to say the Australians under master Dutch coach Guus Hiddink controlled the match and deserved the win.

With the World Cup just weeks away, it gave cause for cautious optimism for Aussie supporters on an incredible high at finally seeing their national team at a World Cup.

With some key names missing from the starting XI - namely Kewell, Aloisi and Cahill - Hiddink tinkered with his formation in game and started with Kalac in goal and Skoko and Sterjovski further up the field.

It was a perfect hit out ahead of their flight to Europe where they would next face Holland in a friendly, which turned out to be another impressive performance in Rotterdam drawing 1-1.

And we all know what happened at the World Cup during that magical June in 2006.
