Kruse making progress, Ryan impressing at Valencia

Robbie Kruse continued his comeback from injury while Maty Ryan kept another clean sheet for Valencia as a host of Aussies were inaction around the globe overnight.

Kruse played the last 25 minutes of Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-1 friendly win over Serie A club Chievo Verona.

The Socceroo winger, who missed half of last season after picking up an injury in the Asian Cup final, is making good progress as he aims to push for a starting XI berth at Leverkusen.

It’s also good news for Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou ahead of next month’s two World Cup qualifiers against Bangladesh and Tajikistan.

Ryan continued his strong start to his Valencia career, keeping a clean sheet in their 0-0 draw against FC Porto, although the La Liga outfit lost in a shootout 5-4.

The Socceroos gloveman has yet to concede in two friendly appearances for his new club.

Elsewhere, Jason Davidson played 82 minutes in Huddersfield Town’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Barnsley and Mile Jedinak played the first half of Crystal Palace’s 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Bailey Wright and Neil Kilkenny both got through 90 minutes as Preston North End went down 3-2 in their friendly with Bury.

James Meredith played 79 minutes as his Bradford City lost 2-0 at Burnley and Bradden Inman was substituted after 75 minutes of Crewe’s 3-2 defeat to Chester FC.

There was 20 minutes of game time for James Holland at his new German club MSV Duisburg but he couldn’t help them from slumping to a 3-0 defeat at Vfl Bochum.

In Scotland, Jackson Irvine played a full match as his Ross County side opened the season with a 2-0 loss at Celtic, where Tom Rogic was an unused substitute.

Striker Scott McDonald played 83 minutes as Motherwell beat Inverness CT 1-0 and Mark Milligan was in the starting side for Baniyas, who beat Levante 3-2 in a pre-season friendly.
