Ibini suffers nightmare start in Belgium

Bernie Ibini has endured a nightmare start to his career with Club Brugge, suffering a suspected fractured fibula during pre-season training.

The Socceroo winger is understood to have suffered the injury during a routine training match which left him moaning on the training ground in pain.

According to reports on the Brugge website, the 22-year-old was rushed to hospital where it’s believed scans revealed he had a fractured fibula.

"I had started with great enthusiasm to my new adventure in Europe," Ibini told the club’s site.

"The integration went remarkably smoothly. It was too good to be true, but I have a lot of courage to return quickly."

The club is awaiting the final results of the scans later on Tuesday (AEST).

The injury is a bitter blow for Ibini, who would have been hoping to impress coach Michel Preud'homme as he aims to cement a spot in the first team before the new season.

"It is very annoying for the boy and especially a line through the bill,” the coach said.

"Football is still a contact sport and you can (still suffer) such an serious injury."

Ibini signed a three-year deal with the club last month, linking up with goalkeeper and close friend Mat Ryan.
