Socceroo fullback Jason Davidson has secured his playing future after signing for Championship club Huddersfield Town on a three-year-deal.
The 23-year-old’s club career had been in limbo after leaving West Bromwich Albion at the end of the 2014/15 Premier League season.
Davidson made just five appearances for the Baggies in the last campaign and admitted he was hungry for another opportunity in England.
“Firstly being in England, it was a key factor for me to make sure I stayed in the UK because I think the level of football over here is fantastic,” Davidson told Huddersfield Town’s Youtube Channel.
“In my experience last year in the Premier League I saw a bit of the Championship and how the teams played and I really wanted to make sure I had another go in England.
“It didn’t really work out for me last year at West Brom. Huddersfield came along, it was something that was really interesting for me and I wanted to make sure it happened.”
Huddersfield manager Chris Powell had been tracking the Socceroo for the past 18 months and said securing a quality left-fullback was a key priority for the club.
“A lot of hard work has gone into bringing Jason to the Club, so it’s fantastic that he’s joined us ahead of the start of pre-season training on 1 July,” Powell told htafc.com
“Recruiting a top quality left back was a key priority in this transfer window and we believe we have achieved this in signing Jason.
“The Club’s scouting process started tracking Jason a full 18 months ago during his time in the Eredivisie and our team has watched him regularly ever since for Heracles, Australia and West Brom’s sides. We tried to recruit him in March, but could not reach a deal.”
The fullback joins former Stoke City midfielder Dean Whitehead as the Terriers' new recruits, with the club looking to rebuild after finishing 16th in the Championship last season.
Davidson said he was impressed with Powell’s football philosophy and admitted the club’s keen interest in him was a key factor in his decision.
“I spoke to the gaffer before signing and he really gave me confidence. To find a coach that has that confidence in you… from day one negotiations I felt the club really wanted me,” he said.
“That was a big factor, to go somewhere you are really wanted and that’s what I felt.”
