Aussies abroad update

Aussie goalkeepers have been seeing plenty of playing time overseas of late as players vie to make Ange Postecoglou's AFC Asian Cup squad. Here's a wrap of the mid-week form of Australia's foreign contingent.

It was a good night for Brad Jones who was in goal for Liverpool as they defeated Bournemouth 3-1 to move into England’s League Cup semi-finals.

The Reds skipped to a three goal lead against the Championship leaders on the back of a double to Raheem Sterling, with Jones beaten by midfielder Dan Gosling just shy of the hour mark.

Brendan Rogers, who this week confirmed Jones will get an extended run as first-choice goalkeeper, will see his side play Chelsea for a spot in the Wembley final.

The Blues had Mark Schwarzer on the bench when they earlier booked their spot in the last four by the same scoreline at Derby County.

In the Bundesliga, Mitch Langerak retained his place between the sticks for Borussia Dortmund but conceded late as his side were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw.

The Aussie shot-stopper has similarly displaced his club’s No.1 and will be hoping for plenty more playing time ahead of the AFC Asian Cup with the Socceroos.

Socceroo number one Mat Ryan was also in action between the posts overnight, keeping a clean sheet for Club Brugge in the away leg of their quarter-final tie against KV Mechelen in the Belgium Cup.

Meanwhile, winger Mat Leckie played a full match and scored the opening goal for Ingolstadt as they claimed a 2-1 win over FC St. Pauli in Germany’s second tier.

Leckie’s side have now won their last four matches and have opened up a seven point lead at the summit in their bid for promotion.

Striker Ben Halloran also played the duration and scored his second goal of the season for Fortuna Düsseldorf who sit seventh in the Bundesliga 2.

The 22-year-old looked to have given his side a share of points after equalising a minute after Dusseldorf conceded but they were undone in injury time on their travels.

Luke Wilkshire played over an hour for Feyenoord as they played out a seven goal thriller against PSV Eindhoven, eventually going down 4-3 against the Eredivisie leaders.

And former Hyundai A-League striker Eli Babalj was on target for the reserve team of AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands earlier in the week as they claimed a 4-2 win over Jong Sparta Rotterdam.
