Aussies abroad update

It was joy for two Socceroos but heartbreak for another in qualifying action for the Europa League on Friday Morning (AEST).

Goal-keeper Mat Ryan was superb as Club Brugge ensured they would be in tomorrow morning’s draw for the group stage, defeating Swiss side Grasshoppers.

The young gloveman kept a clean sheet in this morning’s second leg as Brugge won 1-0 to advance 3-1 on aggregate.

Luke Wilkshire also got through 90 minutes as Feyenoord won a thrilling tie against Ukranian club Zorya Lugansk.

After a 1-1 away draw in the first leg, Wilkshire’s side were forced to work hard to progress, holding off the fast-finishing visitors to win 4-3 at the De Kuip.

But there was disappointment for young defender Trent Sainsbury, who won’t be involved in European competition this season after his PEC Zwolle side was beaten by Sparta Prague.

Sainsbury got through the full match as Zwolle went down 3-1 to former Sydney FC boss Vitaslav Lavicka’s Sparta, losing 4-2 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Mark Bresciano was also in action overnight, getting through almost 70 minutes as his Al Gharafa side were held to a 2-2 draw against Al Arabi.
