Aussies abroad: Caltex Socceroo’s title triumph

Caltex Socceroos fullback Alex Gersbach is celebrating title success in Norway after helping Rosenborg clinch the Tippeligaen Championship with a hard-fought win overnight.

Gersbach played the full 90 minutes as Rosenborg fought back from a goal down to claim a 3-1 victory away to Molde.

Rosenborg only needed a draw to clinch the title but it was the hosts who started the brighter and grabbed the lead on the half-hour mark through Iceland international Bjorn Sigurdarson.

The visitors got back on level terms just five minutes into the second half through skipper Mike Jensen before Christian Gytkjaer fired the Troillongan ahead just past the hour mark.

Jensen completed his brace in the dying minutes to secure the victory and clinch Rosenborg’s second consecutive league title.

Meanwhile, Tom Rogic continued his sizzling form in Scotland, scoring and creating an assist in Celtic’s 6-1 thrashing of Kilmarnock.

The midfielder teed up James Forrest for Celtic’s third goal before finding the net himself with just over five minutes remaining to round out the massive win.

In the English Championship, Socceroos skipper Mile Jedinak played a full match as Aston Villa fought back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United.

Massimo Luongo also got through 90 minutes as QPR were held to a 1-1 draw by Birmingham City at Loftus Road.

The news wasn’t as good for Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield) and Jackson Irvine (Burton Albion), with both playing full games in defeats to Reading (1-0) and Norwich (3-1) respectively.

In League one, James Meredith was involved in Bradford City’s goalless draw away to Bolton Wanderers, while goalkeeper Alex Cisak could do little as Leyton Orient fell to a 3-1 loss at Notts Country in League Two.

New Socceroo James Jeggo continued his impressive form in Austria, helping Sturm Graz to a 3-0 win over Wolfsberger.

Mustafa Amini and Chris Ikonomidis were both second-half substitutes as AGF fell to a 2-0 loss to FC Kobenhavn in the Danish Superliga.

In the Eredivisie, Jason Davidson played a full game as Groningen were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Heracles.

Tomi Juric was a late substitute for FC Luzern as they fell to a 3-1 loss at home to Lausanne in the Swiss Super League.

In Germany, Mat Leckie got through a full shift for Ingolstadt as they suffered a 2-0 loss away to Borussia Mönchengladbach.
