The Subway Olyroos suffered a tightly-fought defeat against neighbours Indonesia on Thursday evening, with a first-half strike from Komang Teguh proving to be the difference on the night.

Australian coach Tony Vidmar lamented the result but highlighted the importance on taking advantage of moments in the match heading into the last group game against Qatar.

"I think overall in the game we played well, we played some really good football."

"It's the moments that you take, we score that penalty, then I think the game definitely changes in our favour. I think that moment gave them a spur on and we just couldn't take our chances, but we created opportunities."

"The goalkeeper had a unbelievable game, but also the way they defended was to throw their bodies at everything. And that just became I think frustrating for our players, but I can't fault how we played."

Vidmar was quick to praise the determined attitude of his Indonesian opponents when asked, however still believes that his side needs to provide further quality to earn positive results in these type of matches.

"It's definitely a combination, the resolute defending from both teams is excellent, but I think we just lack that little bit of composure in front of goals."

"I think there's a number of them that were rushed in shooting. And it is that quality that we just need, that little bit more quality and composure, having that calmness."

"Yeah, sometimes I think we're trying to hit it too hard. There's no need to pass it in but be able to put a little bit of less power on it."

Focus now turns to the last group match of the AFC U23 Asian Cup 2024™, with the Olyroos facing group leaders and tournament hosts Qatar, with a win necessary to have any hope of progressing further in the competition.

Vidmar reaffirmed his confidence in the player pool that he has assembled in Doha, while acknowledging what needs to be done to get the result they are looking for.

"Yeah, we have to rely on other results, but we still have to win the last game against Qatar."

We've got full belief in the squad, that whichever team we put out there, we can play to what we are capable of, but we just need to take our chances."

"That's modern day football, international football, if you create that many chances and you don't take them it bites you. You can have all the territory advantage in the middle of the field but the the points are won inside both boxes."
